"Capt. Watkins First Flight"
Unframed Oil on Canvas 1056mm x 850mm Ref: 003
The inventor Charles Horace Watkins (1884-1976) designed and built a small red plane (Robin Goch) in about 1908 in Maindy, Cardiff. It is claimed that it was the first plane to fly in Wales although there is no photographic or eyewitnesses’ accounts of the flight. Laurie’s painting depicts this flight in a picture with so much activity while Capt. Watkins is quietly soaring above it all on his maiden voyage. The plane is still in existence and can be viewed at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea.

"The Old Steelworks"
Framed Oil on Canvas 722mm x 375mm Ref: 035
The Iron and Steel Works, East Moors in Splott, Cardiff Bay. By 1895 there were 4 blast furnaces . The steel plate produced was used in shipbuilding. After WW2 however the plant began to be adversely affected by the fact that there was no more room for expansion. The East Moors site was closed in 1978 with the loss of thousands of jobs and remained derelict for many years. Laurie’s painting portrays the chimneys pouring smoke into the atmosphere and the steam emanating from the cooling towers reflecting the hive of industry that was taking place in the busy buildings beneath.

"Bedlinog"
Unframed Oil on Canvas 760mm x 610mm Ref: 052
Bedlinog is a beautiful Wesh town that Laurie enjoyed visiting. His paining is full of people busily going about their lives. He depicts the sociability of people in the town while others peep out of windows – all of which hints at stories that are maybe best left to our imaginations! This is representative of Laurie’s love of life and his sense of humour. He was interested in the design of old chapels and the old Salem Chapel features in this happy painting.

"Valleys Landscape"
Framed Oil on Canvas 1055mm x 850mm Ref: 009
Laurie spent a lot of time in the Welsh Valleys. His wife, Marion grew up in the Garw Valley and her father was a miner. He loved the architecture and the people that lived there. This was painted at a time when the coal industry was in crisis and it is now hard to imagine that the Welsh Valleys and their inhabitants were so dominated by the coal industry and the legacy this has left.
